The Global Livingston Institute (GLI) is a not-for-profit organization located in Denver, Colorado, focused on educating big thinkers and global travelers on innovative approaches to international development and on improving global communities. GLI organizes several programs within Eastern Africa to provide cultural learning opportunities and to influence positive change. In efforts to motivate development, GLI has established two campuses in Uganda to create jobs for sustainable living.


The 2017 Uganda Institute for Service Learning will allow counselors to participate in a mental health summit to learn about mental health needs and resources directly from local experts and present on topics in a cross-cultural mental health exchange. In addition, participants will visit various communities and organizations to learn about Ugandan culture and development. Participants will also experience a camera safari at Akagera National Park in Rwanda.

March 24 Breakfast | visit to Katanga Slums of Uganda (a settlement near the city center of Kampala) | visit to Makerere University (one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa) | community BBQ
March 25 Breakfast | visit to Jibu (water company that provides affordable clean water and works to stimulate the economy) | visit to Pam’s Peanut Butter Factory (locally built factory) | visit to Tugende (company that helps motorcycle taxi drivers to become more financially independent) | night out in Kampala
March 26 Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi* | welcome dinner and celebration with Entusi Women’s Association
March 27 Mental Health Summit
March 28 Mental Health Summit | optional hike and visit to Brite’s village (village on the top of the hill from the resort and retreat center) | optional visit to traditional healer | farewell dinner
March 29 Transfer to Akagera National Park | afternoon game drive
March 30 Morning game drive | transfer to Kigali | depart to the United States

*Participants will be transported to the Entusi Resort and Retreat Center on Lake Bunyonyi by a 15 minute boat ride. The resort’s accommodations encompass large tents with comfortable bedding and shared bathrooms and showers.
