In partnership with the Global Engagement Institute (GEI), NBCC International held its 2016 Rwanda institute in July. Coleading the institute were Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) master trainers Chris Townsend, lead clinician at the Center for Behavioral Health and Wellness at North Carolina A&T State University, and Kimberly Zittel, director of the Counseling Center at D’Youville College and owner of Stable Ground Mental Health Counseling. Seven National Certified Counselors with diverse counseling backgrounds attended the institute in Kigali, Rwanda. They engaged in an MHF trainers training and taught the MHF-ASAP! curriculum with Rwandan colleagues. In addition to the MHF trainings, participants also visited the Kigali Memorial Center and various organizations to gain a better understanding of Rwanda’s history, cultural background, and mental health strengths and needs.
